Doors 6:30 PM, Music 7:00 PM
For his Whirlpool series concert, multi-instrumentalist and composer/arranger Julian Woods presents Sensations of Tone, a set of brand new original compositions and arrangements which explore different ways in which music can relate to the physical processes of sound production.
Inspired by composers John Cage, Harry Partch, and John Zorn, and by physicist Hermann von Helmholtz, the music makes use of just intonation (‘pure tuning’) and more gestural approaches to pitch, as well as employing ambient sound and ‘noise’.
As well as original compositions, the group will present new arrangements of music from Maddie Ashman’s widely celebrated solo guitar/voice work ‘otherworld’, which was a bestseller on Bandcamp.
Line-up:
Julian Woods – fretless bass, microtonal guitar, tin cans
Amalia Young – violin
Maddie Ashman – cello, microtonal guitar
Tom O’Brien – samples, FM radio, piano
Jonah Evans – drums, tin cans, percussion
