The Downstairs Living Room

Three of London’s most exciting improvisers get together for the first time to delve into forgotten folk tunes and songs that will never be sung again.

Rebecka Edlund
Rebecka Edlund is a Swedish singer, lyricist and composer with a soft spot for the ocean, anecdotes and rusty orange. Her music is a concoction of jazz and Scandinavian folk music, herding calls, bird whistles and other peculiar sounds, exploring freely improvised
storytelling and contemporary songwriting. Rebecka’s debut album ’Något om en björk’ (2022) was nominated by Lira Music Magazine as the best folk jazz album of the year and her new project ’Virgin Forest’ features the extraordinary musical minds of Laura Jurd and Elliot Galvin.

Kasper Rietkerk
Multi-award winning saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk’s music is a weaving of strong melodies and a deep sense of space. Intricate delicacy meets expressive power in his improvisations. His second album The Happy Worrier (June 2025), has received glowing reviews and features some of the UK’s greatest musicians: John Parricelli, Tom Herbert, Jonah Evans and Rebecka Edlund.

Sam Nicholls
Hailing from the Lake District, Sam carved his drumming from an early age under the tutelage of Dave Hassell and the fresh mountain air. Sam has just graduated from the Jazz Course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is performing around Europe with the likes of Hans Koller and Steve Berry.
