Jazz and improvised music lovers (which of course also includes Vortex regulars!) should be rubbing their eyes in amazement when they see this line-up – and then booking immediately! Here are five of the club’s favourite musicians in a startling combination. This promises to be a memorable night.
For anyone who is less familiar with the players: Paul Dunmall has long been renowned as one of the finest, most powerful saxophonists in the country and Rachel Musson is a player from a younger generation who is rapidly winning a similar reputation. As for putting the two of them together – well, when they put the idea to us, our initial response at the club was to laugh in disbelief, then we thought about it and said “It has to be done”! Add to them the inimitable Pat Thomas on piano, the bass of Nick Stephens – longtime mainstay of many of John Stevens’ bands, and the superbly imaginative drumming of Mark Sanders and you have about as powerful a line-up as it is possible to get.
If you like your music free, strong and intense this has to be unmissable.
