About

A new composition by Johnny Hunter which is constructed to get the most amount of music from the least amount of information. Written specifically to use the outstanding improvising skills of these musicians, but encouraging their improvisation to become more “compositional”. That is, thinking about flow, form, theme and development, whilst still retaining the spontaneity and uncertainty of the Free Improviser.

Rachel Musson is a saxophonist, improviser and composer with two albums under her own name, ‘Tatterdemalion’ with Liam Noble and Mark Sanders (Babel Label), and ‘Flight Line’ with her ensemble Skein (F-IRE Recordeds). Rachel has also performed with the London Improvisers Orchestra, Alex Ward, Alcyona Mick, Han Bennink, Gail Brand, Eddie Prevost, Olie Brice, Federico Ughi, Mary Halvorson, John Russell, Adam Linson, Sebastian Rochford, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Pat Thomas, among many others.

Leeds-based improvising pianist, composer and bandleader, Laura Cole, has received widespread critical acclaim with reviewers describing her music as ‘utterly remarkable’ (Brian Morton, Jazz Journal), ‘amazingly original’ (Jez Nelson, Jazz on 3) and ‘ear-catching and compelling’ (Peter Quinn, Jazzwise). Laura has performed with such esteemed musicians as Corey Mwamba, Kim Macari, Martin Archer, Julie Tippetts, Chris Williams, Ruth Goller, among many others.

Olie Brice is a double bassist, improviser and composer. He leads the Olie Brice Quintet, described as “one of the most interesting and satisfying bands on the current UK scene”. Brice is also in demand as a collaborator and band-member. He has appeared with musicians including Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker, Luis Vicente, Tony Malaby, Ingrid Laubrock, Alexander Hawkins, Ken Vandermark, among many others, and is a member of bands led by Dee Byrne, Alex Ward and Loz Speyer.

Johnny Hunter is a drummer and composer from Manchester, and one of the most in-demand musicians in the North of England having performed regularly with Corey Mwamba, Adam Fairhall, Mick Beck, Cath Roberts, Matthew Bourne, Dee Byrne, Olie Brice, and spending several years in Nat Birchall’s band. Hunter performs his own music regularly with ensembles such as Fragments, Pale Blue Dot, Now It Can Be Told, Johnny Hunter Quartet and, in 2019, was commissioned to write a large ensemble work for 14 improvising musicians.
