Artist: John Etheridge

John Etheridge is a gifted jazz guitarist, composer, bandleader and educator. He was born is South London and began playing at the age of 13.  Although his father was a jazz pianist, he is mainly self taught.  He got his early influences from Hank Marvin, Django Reinhardt, and Joe Pass.  He continued to play in the London jazz scene up until 1967 when he left to study at Essex University.  He returned with a degree in the History of Art.

Upon his return he began to be noticed after working and recording with bands such as ex-Curved Air violinist Darryl Way’s Wolf, an early jazz/rock outfit.  Eventually Etheridge partnered up with Stephane Grappelli, an accomplished jazz violinist.  They continued to work together for the next 6 years, which are referred to the happiest times in music.

Throughout the eighties and nineties Etheridge toured all over the globe including Australia and the USA, which lead to collabrations with artists Juris and Dick Heckstall-Smith as well as bass-player Brian Torff. In July 2006, John began touring a great new programme in a duo set-up with John Williams, the most celebrated classical guitarist of this generation. The two Johns have worked together before, most notably on their interpretations of African music with Francis Bebey, Richard Harvey, Chris Laurence and Paul Clarvis and documented on the CD ‘The Magic Box’.

Etheridge has also been active on the Radio – appearing 6 times as a guest on Radio 3′s Jazz Library series with Alyn Shipton, presenting programmes on Django, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel and most recently Gypsy guitars post-Reinhardt.
