INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY: PIGFOOT PLAY… 1972

Chris Batchelor (trumpet)
Liam Noble (piano)
James Allsopp (baritone saxophone)
Paul Clarvis (drums)

Pigfoot established themselves as radical interpreters of classic New Orleans jazz with their acclaimed CD ‘21st Century Acid Trad’. At their ongoing ‘Pigfoot Play’ residency at the Vortex they have been extending their repertoire in all directions, with gigs dedicated wholly to Opera, Motown and Elvis. Tonight they will premiere a visit to the vintage year of 1972, and conjure up the music of Black Sabbath, Curtis Mayfield, Annette Peacock, Steve Reich, Bob Marley, Ornette Coleman and more, all spontaneously transformed by the band’s wild musicality and wry humour.

“Pigfoot delivered 90 minutes of concentrated joie de vivre in the packed Guildhall. Their alchemical skills are apparently boundless: peaking by transmuting Mozart into Abdullah Ibrahim.”

Jon Turney; Jazzwise, Brecon Jazz Festival 2015
