KIRK LIGHTSEY/JEAN TOUSSAINT (starts 9.30 p.m.)

After two sold out nights in March, are delighted to welcome back iconic pianist Kirk Lightsey, playing better than ever at 80 years young! He renews his partnership with saxophonist Jean Toussaint, former Jazz Messenger; and Austrian trombonist Paul Zauner, collaborator with many ranging from Gregory Porter through to Dave Liebman and David Murray.

Lightsey is one of the last of the great Detroit-born musicians, a heritage that included Hank Jones and Tommy Flanagan, he brings the quality and style of the Village Vanguard to the Vortex.

The rest of the band is Kirk’s preferred London partnership: Steve Watts (bass), Dave Wickens (drums)

CALUM GOURLAY BIG BAND (STARTING AT 8 P.M.)

Calum Gourlay’s Big Band is an all-star line-up of the new generations of jazz musicians in London. Calum himself is one of the most in-demand young bassists, to be heard regularly in Thelonious and with Tommy Smith, but also has been part of the Mercury-nominated Kit Downes Trio.

The Big Band plays new arrangements of standards and also originals by Gourlay. Performing and arranging of the highest order!
