Williams/Ballestrem and co.

Huw V Williams – bass
Johannes Ballestrem – piano
Michael Chillingworth – alto saxophone
Lloyd Haines – drums

Since meeting back in 2011, this will be the first time Huw and Johannes have performed together with Lloyd Haines on drums. This time they have invited acclaimed alto saxophonist Michael Chillingworth to join them. The evening’s programme will consist of original music by various members of the band and as well as some compositions by modern jazz composers.

Johannes von Ballestrem is a German jazz pianist living in Berlin. He is at home in both traditional and modern jazz. Because of this stylistic versatility he works in different bands and regularly gives concerts in Germany and worldwide. It was already on the stage with jazz greats like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen, Eric Harland, Jiggs Whigham, Kurt Elling and Till Brönner.

Michael Chillingworth is a saxophonist and composer based in London. He has performed throughout the UK and abroad with many groups, including Round Trip, Troykestra, Stan Sulzmann’s Neon Orchestra, Ant Law Quintet, James Maddren Quartet, Jack Davies Big Band, Andrea DiBiase Oltremare Quartet, Rick Simpson’s Klammer, Noise Union and Dan Nichols’ Money Jungle and has featured on numerous recordings.

Award winning drummer Lloyd Haines is fresh. The terms ‘rising star’, ‘name to watch out for’. Lloyd is regularly working with a number of bands. He has recently toured with John Law and has worked with Kevin Figes, Rick Simpson, Geoff Simkins, Michael Blake, Pete Hurt and Ant Law, as well as Young Poet Laurette for Wales, Martin Daws. He is involved in the CEC (Creative Ensemble Collective), which includes great international musicians Mick Coady, Vibraphonist Jeff Davis (Portugal), Trumpeter Voro Garcia (Spain) and Vocalist Fini Bearman. Huw V Williams, winner of the 2012 Yamaha Jazz Scholars Prize from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Huw draws on a rich combination of his Welsh roots, his training in jazz, and the contemporary creative music scenes in London, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. With a fast growing CV lit up by the names of some of his heroes including Jim Black, Michael Blake, Jason Rebello, Neil Yates, and long-time mentor Huw Warren, Huw V Williams is building a beautiful bass filled world of free music and primal creativity.
