VOLUNTEERING

Would you like to be part of something unique? For nearly 30 years, the Vortex has been a huge part
of the jazz, improvised and experimental music community. You can read more about our
achievements and very special guests here We are a non-profit volunteer-driven organisation dedicated to providing a stage for musical performances outside of the mainstream. Becoming part of our team means you can listen to the music you love for free, discover new bands and musicians, and even make new friends.

Who volunteers?

Our dedicated volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Without volunteers there’d be no
bar, nobody to run the club, no sound – not even someone to unlock the door for the musicians. We
think this structure gives the Vortex a uniquely friendly atmosphere. Volunteers run the front of house and bar at all our gigs and often provide sound engineering. They help set up before each gig, work the bar, the door, and help to clear up at the end of the night.

With at least one gig almost every night, we’re always looking for new friends to muck in. We love and appreciate every single volunteer because they’re all amazing! If you want to join our family, here’s what you need to know:

What we need:

 You’ll generally need to be able to commit to two gigs/month
 Hours are typically 7pm – 11.30pm each evening, sometimes later at weekends
 You do NOT need bar experience
 You DO need to like people and talking to people

What you get:

 You can come along to any of our gigs for free (unless they’re sold out)
 Get a unique view of Vortex gigs and see some of the leading lights of the scene
 Join a family of jazz and experimental music lovers

Beyond the bar

Volunteers also help the club in other, less public ways. We’re often looking for help in the office
(you never know who you might meet while you’re there…), or if you have professional skills particularly in technology we’d love to hear from you. Or you could distribute our monthly programme flyers in places near you. In the summer we often need help with DIY to smarten up the club. Just ask us what we need right now.
