London Jazz Orchestra

LJO

The London Jazz Orchestra opens its new season of monthly Vortex Sunday Sessions with a live recording session featuring the world premier of John Warren’s new suite The Traveller’s Tale.  It is rare for the LJO to play music by writers who are not members of the band; in the case of Warren, however, we jump at the chance to play his wonderful music.  John has recently written two pieces, Isthmus and Cragside, for the LJO, and this new 8-part suite suite is composed of both entirely new pieces and new arrangements of pieces from his Brass Project collaboration with John Surman.

Originally from Canada, John Warren is a long-term UK resident who is known for his compositional collaborations with John Warren, Mike Westbrook, Kenny Wheeler, and a host of others.  When the LJO first formed as a rehearsal band in 1991 (with Wheeler, John Taylor, and Stan Sulzmann as founder members), Warren’s music formed a large part of the band’s repertoire while it developed its own new pieces.  This show demonstrates how things can sometimes come full circle!
