The week ahead – 28 November

We are in an interdependent world, not just economically but also creatively. When able financially, we happily invite some of the great musicians around to play at the club. And hence remind people what is going on elsewhere.  This week is no exception as we welcome the group Clone Row of New York star drummer Ches Smith, known for work with Tim Berne, Marc Ribot and Vijay Iyer, in a line up including feted guitarist Mary Halvorson, recently seen here with Tomeka Reid. Taking influence ranging from classical innovation of Arnold Schoenberg to the best contemporary this will be unforgettable. Indeed, is “Clone Row” supposed to be similar to “tone row”?

But even though we make the effort to bring such musicians, also from elsewhere in Europe, here, there is a lack of opportunity for jazz organisers elsewhere, especially festivals, to know what is going on in the UK, and hence book the musicians. It’s great that Jazzahead has included in its showcases for 2026, Laura Jurd and Jasmine Myra. But, as this newsletter constantly shows, there are so many others in London who should be heard abroad. When it happens, they go down so well. That was noticeable at a festival like Inntöne in Austria, where some of the real highlights were Heidi Vogel (with Liam Noble), Hans Koller and a residency by Whirlpool musicians.

As well as Ches Smith, this is a week where there are great chances to hear our younger musicians such as Grifton Forbes-Amos (5) or Olly Chalk’s Houndsbleat (4) showing their imaginations give us a sound of things to come. As well as our great role models, such as Basil Hodge (29) and next week, Phil Robson, who brings over the inimitable Jed Levy from New York. So, with 15 events going on, there is definitely something for everyone and no excuse to pass up the chance to visit the club, to be transported by the music.

 28 Forbes/Allsopp/Edwards

A rare trip beyond his usual jazz world for Shaney Forbes, drummer co-founder of Empirical. He brings his driving style, full of textures and variety, in a collaboration with bass master John Edwards and saxophonist/clarinettist James Allsopp

29 (afternoon) Future Standards & Downstairs Jam

Presented by Vortex Collective. Imagining future standards by the likes of Sonny Rollins and other jazz greats. Come and hear, and even join in?

29 Jazz Africa – Basil Hodge

Performing a range of music from Africa, the band sold out the club earlier this year. So get a ticket while you can.

29 Amigos Del Groove

A cosy dance floor, records only, houseparty vibes. Hosted by the amiable host Hector

30 Vortex Jam Session

Possibly the best in London. And free for musicians and members.

1 & 2 December (upstairs and downstairs)

An afternoon and evening showcase of bands from the Guildhall Jazz Department. Led by tutors including Fini Bearman, Tony Kofi, Ivo Neame, Larry Bartley, Mark Lockheart and more!

3 Ches Smith Clone Row (2 shows)

Our mouths are watering as we invite some of the best out of New York’s downtown scene. Ches Smith is amongst the most innovative drummers around. We’ve heard him with his own bands, but also as a revelation with Tim Berne. Two highly individualistic guitars (Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman) swirl about a bass and drums which anchor and unhinge at the same time.

4 (Downstairs early) Inês Loubet

A Portuguese singer-songwriter blending Latin jazz, Tropicalia and soulful grooves.

4 (Upstairs) Houndsbleat

The latest project from pianist/composer Olly Chalk is somehow able to make the complex accessible and totally rewarding. Crossing the boundaries of contrapuntal melodies, ferocious group interplay with a touch of free improvisation.  With saxophonist George Garford, Dan Kemshell on guitar and Sacha Harland on drums.

5 (Early) Downstairs Living Room: A cosy Christmas Evening with Immy Churchill & Sol Grimshaw

An evening of songs with one of our stars of the future to draw you in from the cold.

5 Grifton Forbes-Amos

A trumpeter who can merge jazz with gospel and soul. He’ll create a fusion that is unique, enjoyable and truly memorable.

5 (Downstairs) Vortex Lates: Will Sach

One of the stalwarts of rhythm sections playing with the likes of Joe Webb and Wynton Marsalis emerges from the shadows of the rhythm section to lead his own trio including Will Barry on piano.

6 Levy/Robson International Quartet

Phil Robson renews a musical partnership that started in New York in 2017, with saxophonist Jed Levy, known for his work with Jaki Byard and Tom Harrell. Including, from Rome, drummer Roberto Gatto and UK bassist Mark Hodgson.  Unmissable.

7 Karl Bos

Karl Bos soundtracks a late-night dance downstairs.
